Baby-napping
Jul. 23rd, 2007 09:17 amMy son and D-i-L have begun a new phase in my grandbaby's napping life: they now lay him in his crib when he's getting tired and letting him go to sleep on his own. This after rocking him to sleep became a fight over him *not* wanting to be rocked to the point that he started screaming whenever you try to sit in a rocking chair with him. Which is a shame because I've always loved rocking a baby/child to sleep. Which is funny because I'm not a rocker normally... I get motion sickness too easily. But put a baby in my arms and there's something so soothing about the whole experience, the smell coming from their head, the motion, the feel of them in your arms, the sound of their breathing as it quiets and becomes rhythmic, and the feel of the tension going out of their body as they enter sleep.
Hopefully someday he'll get back to liking being rocked. For now, this putting him to bed rocks for me. He was starting to fuss a little so I went and laid him down, turned on the mobile with music and lights, and left the room. By the time I'd gotten to the laundry room to move clothes to the dryer he was crying. Went back in, turned him on his side, gave him a blankie and patted his butt, then left the room. He stayed quiet, which surprised me. Went right back and checked on him and he was still on his side, eyes closed, and thumb in mouth. WOWW! If only you knew how hard it had been trying to get him to sleep before, finding the right motion (walking, stroller pushing, swaying) and the toll it was taking on my arms. MUCH better... for him, too.
I need to go write. Have a story with a "maybe" acceptance if I can get the ending a little better. Another story half-done that really needs to get to a finish.
I'm finding that there's still a lot about writing a story that I need to learn. I'm just not sure where to learn it at. Much work to do though... I had a thought about this earlier but of course it's escaped me at the moment. Maybe it'll come back to me. But most likely it's lost.
