Beach Glass
May. 8th, 2010 04:16 pmWe search for beach glass on our morning walks at the ocean's edge. Little bits of glass that have been worn smooth and rounded by the pounding waves. Mainly we find white pieces with some green and brown thrown in. Some are tiny slivers, some as big as half an inch. If you're not looking hard, you can step right over them, as they camouflage themselves by hiding amongst pebbles and rocks. Taken separately, they're not much to look at; they have to catch a glint from the sun to be noticeable. But hold them to the light and they shine and glimmer. Pile them in a pretty clear glass and they look like colored mosaic gems.
Looking at them, they remind me of words, all jumbled together and separate, making no sense at all. But string them together and craft them into a story, and something transforms them into a cohesive whole that paints pictures and images in the readers mind. What's more magical than that?
