Some rambling on writing
Apr. 8th, 2009 02:54 pmSo last night I pushed myself past my 100 words per day. As some of you may or may not know, last summer I decided I went far too often with threatening to quit writing and going on self-imposed exiles of not writing and then ending up rusty and squeaky. Or of not writing at all because I only had 30 minutes or so to spare in the day. So I made the vow to write at least 100 words per day just to prove to myself that I could write every day even if it's only for 5 minutes or so.
The downfall of this plan is that quite often I wait until I do have only 20 minutes of daytime left and then dash off my 100 words, stopping when I get to 102 or 103 or so. And sometimes, quite deliberately, I quit writing after 200 words, because if I finished the story, then what the heck would I write about the next day?
In other words, my laziness kicks in. But all in all, the positives have outranked the negatives in my experiment. My plan now is to aim for 500 words per day (actually I made this plan last month some time, but the follow-through was hit and miss), and the 100 words per day is for only those days when I REALLY TRULY ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY ADVERBLY *CANNOT* find the time to write more. (She says, optimistically!)
So last night I finished a rough draft of a short story that began life as a Flash Challenge over at Liberty Hall. In the process of revision, though, I've lost the voice of the story. It's supposed to be light-hearted and fun, and I think I lost a lot of the fun. I'm hoping I can find it again in the next revision. The first draft had a major plot hole for an ending, and the other day the solution came to me. so last night it was all about writing that draft down. Now to find my protag's slightly smug and sassy voice. I know it's around here somewhere.
