Geez, was it hot!
Jun. 22nd, 2008 08:24 pmHave you ever been in the midst of a heat wave in an area that usually has such a temperate climate that NO ONE has air conditioning or even swamp coolers? I hadn't until this weekend. By 11:30 am, it was 104 degrees. That was at the coast (California) where there is no air conditioning, because it NEVER gets that hot. Records were broken everywhere. I heard it even made National news. It was crazy hot. And I live in an area where we routinely have weeks of temps over 104 degrees during the summertime. BUT WE HAVE AIR CONDITIONING and air-conditioned malls and theaters to go to. We stay in a single wide mobile home over at the coast, small yes, but with a million dollar view. But it's simply a tin can in the heat. No insulation to speak of. I would have gone to the mall, but there isn't one -- not air conditioned, anyway (it's an outside mall, and it's inland anyway where I think I heard to got up to 111 degrees!) and besides the hubby hates shopping. So we ended up driving around for about 5 hours, burning up a half tank of gas, which at today's prices cost probably about $40, but there wasn't anything else to do. There was a wind, but it wasn't blowing from off the ocean, so it was hot as hell, I swear to God. I can see why people can die during a heat wave cause I thought I was going to for a while. And I'm used to the heat. But I have air conditioning at home. I wanted to come home, but we stuck it out. After 5 hrs in the truck, I was about ready to die just from car sickness, so we went back to the trailer and it finally started to cool down and the breeze switched direction, blowing in from the ocean. By about 7 pm the temp inside finally started moving down from the 90+ degree mark (the only inside thermometer we have is on the heater thermostat and it doesn't go above 90).
And the next day? The high was about 85, maybe lower. How can you drop temperature by 20 degrees in 24 hours? Crazy stuff.
